Temporal changes in strain condition on all lateral surfaces during pretreatment before timber drying

Wood drying, such as boxed-heart square timber, often involves surface checks, which spoils the appearance of wood products and reduces their market value. Pretreatments are performed to avoid but detailed information about strain during timber drying remains unclear. In this study, detections were using two types sensors (strain gauge optical fiber sensor) understand dimensional changes a series pretreatments, consisting steaming high temperature low humidity treatment. Simultaneous measurements based on sensor grasped distributions in each lateral drying; contraction behaviors observed middle part most surfaces early stage, while one showed expansion. A remarkable expansion was detected treatment, although other gradual behaviors. It also discovered that above gradually reduced with progress pretreatment.
